Privacy policy

Way Off is a browser game. This page explains exactly what we store and why, in plain English.
What we collect
An account identifier. Everyone gets a Firebase account — anonymous by default. It exists so your streak and progress survive a page refresh.
Game data. Your guesses, scores, streaks and badges. Your guesses also feed the anonymous crowd chart shown after each day's game — only as a count in a bucket, never linked to you.
Your email address — only if you choose to save your progress by signing in with Google or with email and password.
Payment records. If you buy Plus, Stripe processes the payment. We store only a customer reference and your Plus status. We never see or store your card details.
Cookies and local storage
Essential only. Your sign-in session and your game progress are kept in this browser's storage. The game cannot work without these. We currently run no advertising and no third-party tracking scripts; if that ever changes, this policy will change first and you'll be asked for consent.
Who we share data with
Google Firebase (hosting, database, authentication) and Stripe (payments). We do not sell your data to anyone.
What's public
Nothing that identifies you. The crowd chart and percentiles are aggregates across all players.
Deleting your account and data
You can have everything we hold about you deleted — a real deletion, not a deactivation. Email support@wayoffgame.com from the address you use for Way Off with the subject "Delete my data". If you've only ever played as a guest, we may ask you to run a short step in the game so we can find the right anonymous account. We action deletion requests within 30 days, usually much sooner, and confirm by reply.
What gets deleted: your account and identifier, your scores, streaks, badges and results, your email address.
What we have to keep: records of any payment you made, because UK tax law requires us to retain transaction records. These are held by Stripe, contain no card details and no game data.
Your device also stores your session and progress locally. Clear this site's data in your browser settings to remove those — that alone doesn't delete your account on our servers; email us for that. Deletion is permanent. Plus access ends with the account.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can request a copy of your data, correct it, or have it deleted. Email support@wayoffgame.com and we'll action it within 30 days.
The Reddit version
Way Off also runs as an app inside Reddit (built on Reddit's Devvit platform). That version stores your scores, streaks and Reddit username for leaderboards inside Reddit's own app storage, separately per subreddit — nothing leaves Reddit, and none of it is connected to your wayoffgame.com account. Guesses feed an anonymous aggregate chart, never stored individually. Logged-out Reddit users can play; nothing about them is stored. Uninstalling the app from a subreddit, or Reddit's own account deletion, removes that data under Reddit's policies.
Children
Way Off isn't directed at children under 13 and we don't knowingly collect their data.
